McCourt, former SBNH Board Chair, honored for his enduring leadership and long-term support of South Boston families
BOSTON (March 4, 2026) — McCourt Global today announced that its Executive Chairman, Frank McCourt, will receive the Joe “Dodo” Nee Champion Award at the South Boston Neighborhood House (“SBNH”) Annual Gala & Auction on March 20, 2026. Named in honor of longtime SBNH board member Joseph J. “Dodo” Nee, the award recognizes individuals whose sustained contributions have advanced SBNH’s mission to strengthen family and neighborhood life in South Boston. This year’s fundraising event also marks SBNH’s 125th anniversary.
Established in 1901, SBNH – affectionately known as “The Ollie” after Founder Olivia James – is one of America’s original historic settlement houses and the oldest continually operating human service agency in Massachusetts. The organization serves residents across generations through programs that include early education and childcare, school-age enrichment, youth education and career development, family engagement and support, as well as a senior center focused on reducing social isolation through activities and services.
McCourt is a lifelong supporter of SBNH and previously chaired the organization between 1992 and 2004, helping advance its work as an independent, community-based provider dedicated to meeting the needs of families facing social and economic hardship. Among his many contributions, McCourt led the organization through challenging times, including the local suicide crisis of the early 1990s; helped establish the South Boston Association of Nonprofits, a partnership of more than 30 organizations with a mission to build a healthier community for all of South Boston’s residents; and played a key role in building SBNH’s current headquarters at 136 H Street.
“I’m deeply honored to receive the Joe “Dodo” Nee Champion Award from a special organization that represents South Boston’s resilience, sense of community, and commitment to looking out for one another,” said McCourt. “The South Boston Neighborhood House has been a vital anchor for generations of families, offering a safe haven for children, support for parents, and connection for seniors. I’m proud to have been part of its story and I share this recognition with the extraordinary staff, volunteers, and supporters who make The Ollie’s mission real every day.”
McCourt expanded on his comments and ties to the city in a recent interview with Caught in Southie, South Boston’s neighborhood magazine.
Kathy Lafferty, Executive Director of South Boston Neighborhood House, added that McCourt’s long-standing service reflects the spirit of the award. “Frank has always been a true champion of our work and has left a lasting legacy that continues to shape who are today. Honoring him at our 125th Anniversary Gala feels especially meaningful. It is a tribute to his years of leadership, generosity and support. We know that Dodo would wholeheartedly approve; he and Frank shared a wonderful relationship grounded in deep mutual respect and admiration.”
This year’s SBNH Annual Gala & Auction, taking place at the Thomas Menino Convention Center, brings together community leaders, alumni, families, and supporters to celebrate the organization’s mission and to raise critical resources for programs that serve South Bostonians from early childhood through older adulthood, especially as its beneficiaries continue to navigate the challenges of economic inequality and rising living costs.
