Project Liberty
Shaping the internet for tomorrow
MG’s dedication to innovation and civic life inspired and incubated the work of Project Liberty — a far-reaching initiative that aims to restore agency in the digital age by giving people ownership and control of their personal data.

Better Web, Better World
In 2021, Project Liberty made the groundbreaking Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP) available as a public utility to serve as the bedrock of a healthier and more inclusive web.
It also launched the Project Liberty Institute (formerly The McCourt Institute) to ensure that digital governance is prioritized in the development of the next generation of the internet. The Institute’s founding academic partners include Georgetown University, ETH Zurich, and Stanford University; and it is collaborating with MIT’s Center for Constructive Communication, Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, and Cortico to support the creation of healthier social networks.
Project Liberty’s comprehensive work stemmed from the Unfinished initiative, which MG launched in 2020 to bring together leaders and experts from across technology, academia, social impact, and the arts to imagine and create a thriving democracy and just economy. Unfinished incubated a vibrant, international network of nearly one hundred partner organizations and, in 2021 and 2022, hosted the celebrated Unfinished Live convening in New York City.
